History
Overbrook Presbyterian Church has a rich history. On January 11, 1900, a Congregational Meeting was held to name the new church and Overbrook was chosen. On May 2, 1915, the first service was held in a newly constructed building on, what was then called, Stuart Road in Barton Heights. Later the street on which the church was located was changed from Stuart Road to Overbrook Road. By its 50th anniversary, Overbrook had grown to 600 members. From the very beginning, Overbrook has had a true missionary spirit which continues today as church members are active in many causes for Christ at home and elsewhere. We are very proud that from our church, several men and women have gone into the ministry as well as into the mission field.

During the late 1940s and early 1950s, a building boom following World War II was underway around Richmond, resulting in many new suburban communities being constructed outside the city limits. By 1953, so many of its members were moving to the suburbs, that the congregation decided to relocate accordingly. Property along Dumbarton Road was purchased and in January of 1955, ground was broken for the new sanctuary. The building on Overbrook Road was turned over to the newly formed congregation of All Souls Presbyterian Church. While awaiting the completion of its new building, Overbrook Church held weekly services in the Red Cross Building on Lakeside Avenue. On January 1, 1956, the first service was held in the new sanctuary. Church membership grew steadily throughout the remainder of the decade.

The Sixties constituted another decade of growth for Overbrook. A steeple was added to the sanctuary in 1961. The educational building was added in 1963 and a second morning service was also added to foster the growing congregation. In 1973, the sanctuary was transformed to its present Colonial, Old Presbyterian Meeting House, style.

The mission of Overbrook Presbyterian Church..."To win people to faith in Christ...To build people up in Christ...To send people out for Christ" continues as Overbrook is now in our second century. Christ has been the cornerstone of Overbrook's ministry, from the second floor of Rady's Drug Store, to the small building in Barton Heights, to the building that is now home to All Souls Presbyterian Church, and since 1955, at the present location on Dumbarton Road.

God does not call us to rest on what has been, but to press forward, being a witness for Christ as the Saints were before us.

To God Be the Glory...
Great Things He Hath Done.

We believe:
1. In One God who is self-revealed as a triune being, that is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

2. In Jesus the Christ who was fully God and fully man. Unique in all of history, Jesus has eternally existed, Jesus is the creator, and Jesus was not created. Jesus is God and therefore has most perfectly revealed God.

3. The whole human race is broken and out of harmony with God who is perfect in every way. All humanity deserves God’s judgment, but God’s love is strong and He restrains judgment and offers grace and mercy to all who will receive it. God’s grace and mercy is offered through the Christ who is Jesus. Jesus was perfect in every way and came into this world to die for the human race. When Jesus died on the cross and arose triumphantly from the grave it was for the benefit of all people. When Jesus died he took the judgment that we all deserve, and resurrecting from the dead makes it possible for everyone to be reconciled to God (saved).

4. God saves people by His grace alone, through our faith alone, and we know this by scripture alone.

5. To accept God's offer of grace and mercy (salvation) is to commit yourself to love and serve God as much as you can and to give grace and mercy to others.

6. The Bible is the final authority for our understanding of who God is and what God wants from people.

7. God is love and desires wholeness and well-being for people. The grace and mercy that God offers is powerful and transforming, able to overcome and redeem any human condition.

8. God hears and responds to prayer.

9. God is sovereign and history is moving toward a grand "Day of the Lord" that God has planned. Jesus will come again for a final judgment for some, and a great eternal reward for all who have accepted God's offer of grace and mercy in Jesus the Christ.
